AI that lives on a server, not trapped in an app. A platform where anyone spins up their own robot, with persistent memory, real skills, and a home of its own. Unlike a chatbot you summon and dismiss, it is always present and acting on your behalf. I am its first user, and I am building it now.

A crypto trading platform spanning more than fifteen jurisdictions. I built the KYC, AML and compliance machinery, the BBVA payment integration, and multi-venue order execution. Regulated fintech is mostly patience and edge cases, and I grew to rather like that.

Becoming a student again, just before the crypto years.

Cloud APIs for financial products. I led the Saxo Bank brokerage integration and a wealth solution for Edmond de Rothschild. Two names I never expected to see on my CV, which is part of why I said yes.

Micro-elearning on a native app, with our own authoring tool. We did such a great technical job. And, sadly, I made just about every go-to-market mistake there is. The one thing I would rewind and change, if I could. I can't, so I suppose I will have to try again.

My first company, built with two wonderful co-founders. A software consultancy that grew to around twenty-five people across Spain, India and the US. Some of what we made back then is still running today, which, for bespoke software, is no small feat.

Systems design in Borland JBuilder, replacing a mainframe from the 1970s with something new in Java. The old machine tracked the entire UK rail network down to the last bolt. I learned a great deal about the imperial system and forgot all of it the day I left. I also met the best Oracle OCP I have ever worked with.

Systems design again, this time with a team in India. A lot learned about building software across countries and timezones, back before remote work had a name.

My first job in the UK. They hired me even though I barely spoke any English. Those were different times. A great team, wonderful people every one of them, and one in particular who is a friend for life.

The world was supposed to end with Y2K. It didn't, so we got on with building the new internet instead, one XMLHttpRequest at a time. I remember watching the planes hit the towers while we worked. It was scary, the world changed and I did not realise it at the moment. This period was one of the most fun and interesting stretches of my life.
